Fatalities In Mishaps High, 38,204 Killed In Last 10 Years Odisha Roads:
Bhubaneswar:18.12.19 The fatalities in road mishaps in Odisha has been alarmingly high. While the national average for deaths in every 100 accidents is 32, Odisha records 47 fatalities.In Odisha, 5,315 persons were killed and 5,000 seriously injured in road accidents in 2018. During 2008 and 2018, Odisha recorded 38,204 casualties in road accidents, among whom more than 70 per cent were bread earners of their respective familis.Raising concerns over this serious statistics, the Supreme Court Committee directed the State to reduce fatalities by 20 per cent by 2020. However, the situation on ground speaks a different picture. There has been 7.5 per cent increase in road mishap fatalities between January and September 2019 (compared to same period in 2018). During this period 4,115 persons lost their lives on roads in Odisha.The State Road Safety Committee met at the Lok Seva Bhavan today and chalked out a strategy to check road accident related death in Odisha. “It was observed that most deaths occur due to unavailaility of medical treatment during the golden hour. So, we have facilitiated free treatment of road accident victims at select private hospitals in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack within 48 hours of the mishap,” Transport and Commerce Department Minister Padmanabha Behera said.For this purpose, the Health and Family Welfare Department has been given Rs 4 crore from the road safey fund. Besides, the H&FW Department has initiated steps to open Trauma Care centres in each districts. “Due to coordinated efforts, road accident fatalities during July to September, 2019 have been reduced by 4.5 crore compared to last year,” added Behera.
